Statement from the African Women’s Lobby (AWL)

Released on  1 August 2024

The African Women’s Lobby (AWL) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent events during South Sudan’s Olympic basketball pre-qualification games on July 28, 2024, and July 31, 2024, where an incorrect national anthem was played. The misrepresentation of a nation’s anthem is a matter of significant importance and respect, reflecting the identity and pride of a country and its people.

AWL acknowledges the efforts and enthusiasm of all involved in promoting and supporting African sports on the global stage. We understand that such errors can occur unintentionally and urge the relevant organizing bodies to address this issue promptly. An apology is truly meaningful only when the mistake is not repeated again. It is crucial to ensure that future events reflect the utmost accuracy and respect for national symbols, which are integral to the spirit of international competitions.

We call for a thorough review of the protocols surrounding national anthems at international sporting events to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, we encourage a formal apology to the South Sudanese team and its supporters, recognizing the impact this oversight may have had on their national pride and dignity.

AWL remains committed to supporting and advocating for the proper representation and respect of African nations and their symbols in all international forums.

Sincerely,

African Women’s Lobby (AWL)
